Paragould is a city located in Greene County, Arkansas. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 22,017. The city is the county seat of Greene County. Its name combines the last names of J.W. Paramore and Jay Gould, the owners of the two railroads that originally crossed there; it is believed to be the only city in the world with this name.
Paragould is located at 36°3'25" North, 90°30'11" West (36.057075, -90.502938).
According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 80.2 km2 (31.0 mi2). 79.8 km2 (30.8 mi2) of it is land and 0.4 km2 (0.2 mi2) of it is water. The total area is 0.52% water.
As of the census of 2000, there are 22,017 people, 8,941 households, and 6,133 families residing in the city. The population density is 275.9/km2 (714.6/mi2). There are 9,789 housing units at an average density of 122.7/km2 (317.7/mi2). The racial makeup of the city is 97.77% White, 0.14% Black or African American, 0.42% Native American, 0.22% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.56% from other races, and 0.86% from two or more races. 1.33% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
